Before the US adopts the silly cap-and-trade “market” approach to curbing carbon emissions, perhaps we should see what the recession has done to the European carbon market. The EU has spent a lot of money rediscovering the laws of supply and demand in this recession. Instead of making carbon emissions a scarcity, the economic collapse has created a glut of indulgences… All of which has set off what Julian Glover calls the “Great Pollution Fire Sale”. He blames the EU for being too generous in its allocation of carbon credits, but the allocation was calculated during economic growth. The EU wanted to make sure that the cap-and-trade system didn’t interfere with the economy, and so made sure that the energy producers didn’t get disincentivized enough to create artificial energy shortages that would have stalled growth.

As much as I consider this whole "carbon footprint" idea ridiculous and ignorant, consider the vast carbon footprint of Live Earth, during which the world’s most indulgent people - rock stars - will demand that their followers pledge to “take personal action to help solve the climate crises by reducing my own C02 pollution as much as I can.”

How can one not Laugh Your A Off?

Hello there, My name is Simon a 15 year old with a question bugging me so much and i hope you guys and girls out there can help me.

Here goes If PEOPLE have to stop emmiting there carbon emmissions (if you know what i mean) why are we told to not use our cars, save electricity etc etc. When there a MASSIVE coal companies all around the world which are
A) Producing electricity which cannot be stored and used later
B) not being told to shut down because of there carbon emmisions.
As they say in some ardverts "With your little help towards stopping carbon emissions then we can make the world a better place."
Well if the companies shut down and there are still some to produce energy then WE can still do our bit and save the planet more.

My question : why arent we shutting down companies which produce lots of carbon dioxide!?
