How can airlines help lower an aircraft’s weight at take-off, thereby reducing its carbon footprint?

Would it make sense to weigh each passenger with their luggage,
and to take this total weight into account when setting the price
of that passenger’s ticket along with any additional
(and sometimes passenger-discretionary) needs
such as extra-wide seating or extended leg-room?

It would, but it would slow-up the boarding process, which would cost the airline $$$. Also, I’m sure someone would sue for some sort of discrimination….
i doubt that will work, but rather good point tho.
if weight was such an issue, why many aircraft producers are hauling in their largest ever planes on board. Airbus has the A380 and boeing is already on its way..747…
these planes have even larger cargo and passenger compartments.
what if less and less people traveled by air instead? less flights, less jet fuel used equals less emissions.
however, that idea will not fit in real life will it?
Airline seats are filled in a highly competitive way. If one airline hassles it’s passengers with nickel and dime expenses, another airline will not…and passengers will flock over to the competition’s gates. Your idea would never get off the ground.
That is a good idea, but it’s sorta already in practise. In most airlines, for passengers who have too much weight, they need to pay a fee or get rid of the weight.
I liked JetMech’s pun there
I don’t know about taking into account passenger weight, but the airlines already charge extra for extra luggage, they charge an additional fee if your checked luggage is greater than 50 lbs, and they’re starting to charge extra for bulkhead seats and emergency row seating, which have lots of extra leg room.
That would embarrassed the customers and make them feel not welcomed. That would be a bad idea.
More stupid eco-time wasting. And what effect would such stupidity have on global warming or whatever other environmental ill you want to blame on air travel.
Absolutely NIL.
The only effect might be to make some tree-huggers happier but as a practical solution like most of these "environmental initiatives" it does absolutely nothing.
Yet MORE headaches, hassles, and unnecessary expense from an overly intrusive nanny state government agency chasing the HOAX of manmade global warming.
Haven’t you heard that the "carbon footprint" has been replaced by the "Algore Buttprint" - 10 x as bad…
