Knock yourself out.
After the global lightsout we had a while back, we had record snow all winter.
That is absolute proof that this sort of thing works.

Interesting thought but not very practical. The huge interconnected computer networks of the world uses a huge amount of electricity - "EPA estimates the peak load on the [US] power grid from data centers was approximately 7.3 gigawatts (GW) in 2007, or 1.5 percent of total U.S. electricity consumption." However, turning off the infrastructure of the Internet is just way too complicated: there are millions of computers, routers, switches, air conditioners, and other devices spread across thousands of data centers. A clean power down of these systems would take hundreds of thousands of person-hours of work and just as many to power them back up. And a small percentage of systems would fail to turn back on causing all sorts of disruption.
On the positive side, 7.3 gigawatts of electricity offers a big incentive, so there is hardly a data center in the world that is not working on going "green". The green is as much about the green of money as the green of the environment, but the direction is positive.
Of course, turning off your personal computer when not using it (and for Earth Hour of course) is something each of us should do.

Good Question!
How much good does the interenet do, in terms of spreading awareness about global warming etc, if it were switched off, would this off set the imissions cuased by a subsiquent growth in ignorance.
